What Is NDIS Plan Management? A 2026 Guide for Participants
A practical, current explanation of what Plan Management is, what a registered Plan Manager does, how it affects provider choice and what to check before you sign up.
In one sentence
NDIS Plan Management is financial administration for plan-managed funding
A registered Plan Manager can handle provider invoices, NDIS claims, provider payments, financial records, budget monitoring and statements for the parts of an NDIS plan that are plan-managed.
What does an NDIS Plan Manager actually do?
A Plan Manager sits between the participant, providers and the NDIS payment system for plan-managed supports. Their work is primarily financial and administrative. A Plan Manager is not the same as a Support Coordinator and should not make decisions that remove a participant’s choice and control.
- Receive and review provider invoices for plan-managed supports.
- Submit claims through the relevant NDIS payment system.
- Arrange payment to providers from available plan-managed funding.
- Maintain financial records and provide statements.
- Monitor spending and help participants understand what has been used and what remains available.
- Answer Plan Management questions from participants and authorised support people.
How is Plan Management funded?
If Plan Management is included in your NDIS plan, the NDIS includes funding to pay for a registered Plan Manager. That funding is separate from the budgets used for your other NDIS supports. You should still confirm the management arrangements shown in your own plan.
Can I use registered and unregistered providers?
For many supports, a participant whose funding is plan-managed can choose registered or unregistered providers. Some support types still require registered providers, so it is important to check the rules for the support you are purchasing.
Plan managed vs self managed vs NDIA-managed
The three management approaches differ mainly in who handles invoices and payments, which providers can be used and how much financial administration the participant takes on. Some participants also use more than one management method for different parts of their plan.

What should you expect from a good Plan Manager?
Look for clear communication, accurate records, transparent budget information, a straightforward invoice process and a service agreement that is easy to understand. Ask how incomplete invoices are handled, how often statements are provided, how authorised representatives can access information and what happens if you want to change providers.
What changes in 2026 are worth knowing about?
New and reassessed NDIS plans may include funding periods. Funding periods are designed to support budgeting across the life of a plan, so regular spending visibility matters. Plan Managers should continue to administer claims and financial records in line with the participant’s plan and current NDIS requirements.
